Got shoes? Our Lexington Irish dance program will take them!

While our community-based Lexington Irish dance program has had a lot of support at filling our used shoe bin over the past year, we can still use your help. If you have lightly used or outgrown shoes you could donate, we’d be happy to have them. What do our Lexington Irish dance students need? Our students are mostly ages 4-9 and while our bin is full of itty-bitty shoes, we're looking for donations of children's sizes 10 and up. Have other sizes? We'll be happy to accept those, too. Why do we need your donations? Currently, none of the dance supply stores in Lexington stock ghillies or hard shoes, and local competitions where vendors may be selling shoes are hours (and months) away from the start of our classes. Now is the time to dance with our community-based Lexington Irish dance school where you'll find fun, affordable instruction with a certified teacher for both children and adults. Our classes are offered in partnership with Artworks at the Carver School, a community cultural arts program in downtown Lexington. What is our Lexington Irish dance school like? We focus our dance classes on group choreography — known as ceili dancing — for fun, for exercise, for performance and for competition. Sometimes the things staring you right in the face don't stand out as a milestone until someone else points it out. That's the case for our Lexington Irish dance school and the weekend coming up. This Father's Day weekend in Kentucky is also a back-to-back Irish dance competition weekend -- the Louisville Feis is Saturday and Lexington's Bluegrass Feis is Sunday. For those new to Irish dancing, a "feis" (pronounced "fesh") is a local dance competition. At our rehearsal Monday night, I was giving our dancers a pep talk -- you see, it's the first time each of them will be competing in Irish dance. Alltech’s Dr. Pearse Lyons was an inspiration and a friend to so many in our community. I was fortunate to know him and spend time with him and his wife Deirdre at a number of events over the past decade. While he left this world on March 8, his immense influence carries on. This St. Patrick’s season Bluegrass Ceili Academy’s dancers answered Dr. Lyons’ call to "do what makes our hearts sing.” It’s a charge we will continue to carry with us beyond March, through the rest of this year and as we build our…
